Assuming you have a HDMI plug on your TV and your DVD player:

Scenario 1.
You've upgraded your old DVD player. Chances are your going to need a lot less cables running between your DVD and TV now. So first things first, remove your existing cables running from your TV to your old DVD player. Replace your old DVD player, kick the old one out. Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the back of your new DVD player and the other into the HDMI connection on the back of your TV. Connect the power, locate the DVD on-screen menu and adjust the HDMI settings to the highest resolution (will be a number like 720p, 1080p etc) to the highest your TV can support and hey presto, your done. Of coarse if you had a surround sound system connected to your old DVD player, un plug those cables and plug into the back of your new Blue Ray, HD DVD player as well.
